Using hand to communicate

05/15/10

Jackson can use his hand to communicate.  Support his arm at the elbow if possible without restricting the forward movement of his arm.  Cock his hand back so it is not flopped forward.  The room must be pretty quiet so he can hear and process what you are saying.  He is very distracted by other noises, even ones that are not very loud.

He can also sometimes use his hand to choose between 2 objects without support under his elbow.  It just depends on how he feels that day.  Sometimes it is just too much for him to do this.  Here is a video of him identifying colors on flashcards.  Notice that it can take him a lot of time sometimes to get his body moving (and sometimes he just likes messing with you).  If you are patient and wait for him to answer, he can do a lot!!
